Kripalu Bhakti Bliss New Year's Retreat with David Newman & Mira

Mantra Music Concert: 7 -9 pm
Free your heart and stir your soul in this evening of ancient mantras given new voice through dynamic songs that merge New Orleans roots, rock, gospel, and world grooves. The trio’s latest album Unity debuted #1 on the iTunes World Music Chart and #3 on Billboard. Their music has appeared on several Putumayo World Music compilations, and they are the first kirtan-based band to ever play The New Orleans Jazz Festival. Bhakti On The Mat: The Mythic World of Yoga: 10:00am – 12:30pm
Merge the heart-opening qualities of bhakti yoga with the sensuality and vitality of asana. This deep and playful all-levels practice includes storytelling from the mythical world of yoga, soul-stirring kirtan, graceful vinyasa sequences, imaginative meditations, and evocative live music. Some experience with yoga is recommended. Sean and the band have guided this workshop at festivals and conferences across the country including sold-out attendance at The Yoga Journal Conference and Bhakti Fest. Wild Lotus Tune Up: The Yoga of Sound: 2:30 – 5:30pm
Explore one of the most ancient and powerful forms of yoga- the yoga of sound vibration. Learn about how sound has been used to shift our consciousness in cultures around the world as well as in the science and medical fields. Experience a special vocal yoga singing practice designed to help you tune the instrument of your body. Dive into a playful rhythm session guided by Gwendolyn to help you get in touch with your inner drummer. And savor the power of delightfully bringing song and dance together to awaken joy and brighten your soul.

Bhakti On The Mat: Poetry of the Heart & Body: 10:00am – 12:30pm

After an opening Q & A where you are welcome to ask any questions to help support you in integrating bhakti into your heart and life– Sean and the band will take us on a a closing story and song journey, weaving dharma, myths, tales from Sean and the band’s life, and interactive kirtan and songs.

About the Presenters:
New Orleans’ Sean Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band
(Alvin Young and Gwendolyn Colman) are regarded as one of the guiding voices of kirtan music in America – a genre of spiritual music that originates in the yoga traditions of India, and is being reinvented by a growing number of western artists. Sean, Alvin and Gwendolyn put a New Orleans and American stamp on kirtan by merging ancient mantras with rock, roots, gospel, and world grooves.

Sean is also a well-loved yoga teacher who teaches at conferences and retreat centers internationally including Yoga Journal, Kripalu, Bhakti Fest, and The German Yoga Conference. He is the founder of Wild Lotus Yoga studios in New Orleans, and Soul School, an interdisciplinary yoga teacher training program that focuses on teaching yoga with both skill and imagination. He has a Master’s degree from The Naropa Institute- Oakland with focus on teaching chant as spiritual practice, and is the co-curater and co-producer of Putumayo World Music’s yoga music series. Sean and the band’s 8 Day BHAKTImmersion attracts yogis and yoga teachers who wish to experience the inspiration of bhakti yoga in a deep, fun, integrated way. The sessions are educational, experiential, and help participants to empower their creativity through the arts of bhakti yoga. Participants in the BHAKTImmersion have hailed from Italy, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, across the country, and of course the New Orleans region.

PLEASE NOTE: Space is limited. The last few BHAKTImmersions have sold out several months in advance. Early registration highly recommended.

Sing your heart out, rekindle your soul, awaken the gods and goddesses within you, tap into your inner poet, dance like a child, feel your fingers tickle the harmonium as you accompany your chanting, get your hands on a drum and find your rhythm, explore the beauty, romance, and celebration of New Orleans, rejoice in the awakening of your unique voice and creativity.

Enhance your connection to Life through Bhakti yoga and kirtan. This 8 Day Intensive is for anyone who wants to steep in bhakti- the yoga of the heart, for yogis who are seeking to deepen their practice, and for yoga teachers seeking inspiration in integrating more bhakti into their classes.

Starting on Saturday, mornings are focused on self-exploration and satsang through singing meditation, interactive chanting, exploration of the archetypes of the gods and goddesses, guidance on how to bring more bhakti into your life; dancing, storytelling, mythology, journaling, and love poetry from the Bhakti tradition. Through the week there will also be a couple of  bhakti on the mat asana practices led by Sean and accompanied by Alvin and Gwendolyn. Afternoons include more kirtan and supportive instruction in: basic harmonium with Sean; intermediate harmonium with guest teacher Joe Ashlar; basic rhythm and drumming workshops with Gwendolyn; and basic guitar-and-bass-for-kirtan with Alvin. Evening celebrations include opening dinner gathering; house party with live local music; and NOLA music outing with Gwendolyn.

The week closes with the band sharing a Saturday evening headline set at New Orleans Sacred Music Festival at Cafe Istanbul performance hall.

This retreat is an invitation to drink from the life-giving well of Bhakti Yoga, the Yoga of the heart. Sean and the band will create a safe and invigorating space for you to:
